Don't Ignore the RSVP card

Whether I’m working an event or hosting my own, there’s a bit of an issue that causes me a lot of aggravation. Are you coming or not?

“Rèpondez s’il vous plaît” is a French term that means “please respond” to whether or not you plan to attend an event you were invited to.
This is a very important gesture that’s required by the invited to allow the host the opportunity to make certain guest count considerations. When you see the RSVP card accompanied with your invitation, it doesn’t mean to respond only if you plan on attending; you need to respond with a yes or no. However, if it specifically says something along the lines of “regrets only” then you can ignore if you’re going to the event.

Here are a couple of things to consider:

Final Head Counts
The host will need to know how many of the invited will attend in case (s)he needs to give a final head count to a venue or caterer (for example). Confirming your attendance with an RSVP will allow the host to provide an accurate count so that there will be enough food for the guests to eat and space to prevent crowding and potential fire hazards.

Sorry, No Admittance! 

If you do not RSVP, do not assume that you can still attend the event you were invited to. Just because you received an invitation, if you don’t RSVP, you may not be cleared to attend the event. I’ve seen people turned away from an event because they neglected to RSVP and in turn, their seat was filled by someone else. It can be quite embarrassing to be turned away all because you neglected to RSVP. Usually all it takes is a simple phone call to the phone number provided or returning the pre-stamped addressed envelope to the host.
