I Want Cash Gifts for my Wedding

Sigh. I see this question come up all of the time. Brides not sure of what to do and actually having anxiety over the issue of asking for money in lieu of gifts at their weddings.

The answer is a firm NO.

Asking for cash should not be written anywhere for proper etiquette's sake. Not in your invitations, save the dates, nor wedding websites. The best way to convey this is to spread the word (through one person) and let it trickle down the pipeline; but not make it an issue to prevent others from taking the time to give you what their heart discerns in them to give to help make your new lives together special. Keep in mind that this can also backfire as people tend to give what they can afford. If you have a registry item that's within a guest's budget and it's something you need it's a win-win and that item could cost something like $10. If that same guest learns that you'd prefer cash, then in your envelope you'll get $10 (or less). You may have envelopes like that from a majority of your guests and you won't have enough to buy much of anything for your new home, honeymoon, or come close to breaking even on the expense of your wedding.

Gifts are not mandatory and when given can come in a variety of forms, store bought, hand made, and for those who can do it...money. Consider your guests and offer them options by registering for the things you need. There are many sites available like www.myregistry.com where you can register your gift choices at many stores from one portal. The harsh truth is if you need money, reconsider the wedding budget and make adjustments where necessary. You don’t want to start your new life together in financial strain, so begin planning with a realistic budget.
